Capital Region Language Center Celebrates 20 Years!

Students, teachers and local officials gather as Capital Region Language Center celebrates 20 years. In 2003, Kim Andersen founded Las Mariposas Spanish School from an extra room in her Ballston Spa home. The former public-school teacher offered two classes a week –
one for adults, one for children.

Today, Capital Region Language Center has grown to become the area’s largest language school. With a team of more than 30 teachers, CRLC offers more than 50 classes a week in twelve languages. They include American Sign Language (ASL); Arabic; Chinese; English; French; German; Japanese; Korean; Latin; Portuguese (Brazilian and European) and Spanish.

The school also works with organizations and businesses, often meeting one-on-one by video with employees to improve Business English. Classes are offered by online and in-person, at their Colonie location, and around the area, including Saratoga Springs.

20th Anniversary Event

On Saturday, October 28th, CRLC hosted a 20th anniversary event at The LindaWAMC National Public Radio, to celebrate with current and former teachers and students. Several guests shared their experiences and how the school’s language instruction shaped their lives.

They were joined by elected officials, including NYS Assemblyman Phil Steck and United State Congressman Paul Tonko (pictured below). Presenting proclamations, they recognized the important contributions Capital Region Language Center has made. These include supporting the region’s growing technology sector, as well as strengthening the area’s workforce and communities.

Language Classes for All Ages

Today, as Capital Region Language Center celebrates 20 years, it continues to provide classes for all ages. They teach in public libraries, for toddler and pre-school story hours. They also serve as language teachers in several private schools as well as offering LEAP! (Language Enrichment and Arts Program) as an after-school option for many districts. Capital Region Language Center also works with high school and college students, employers, unions, universities and provides classes at senior living facilities.

Now Offering Business Workshops for DEI

In addition to providing language instruction, CRLC is working across the state, providing business communication workshops, as a New York State Certified Women-Owned Business Enterprise. Many organizations work with CRLC to customize workplace sessions to meet their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals.
