At Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute, we recently provided a customized Culture & Etiquette Workshop to prepare a team for travel to Japan. The trip is sponsored by University Partnership for Workforce Advancement and Research and Development in Semiconductors for the Future (UPWARDS for the Future).

In addition to key phrases and proper greetings, participants learned important culture and etiquette tips for business and academic settings in Japan, including:

• Handing a business card to someone, face up, using both hands
• Punctuality and bowing as signs of respect
• Where to sit at a business dinner, how to use an oshibori (hand towel), and chopsticks

The culture & etiquette workshop was designed and delivered by Yoko Segerstron, a Japanese language instructor at Capital Region Language Center. A native Japanese speaker, Segerston was born and raised near Tokyo. In addition to providing practical skills and etiquette, she explained differences in Japanese culture and values that drive their customs.

Participants were able to practice what they learned to build confidence, while asking questions and benefiting from feedback in real-time.
